CHURCHES

Under the leadership of professor Vera Bitrakova - Grozdanova, Ph.D. who conducted the ercheological excavations since 1967, remains of two early Christian chrches (4th - 5th century) have been discovered. According to tradition, there were 7 churrches on the island (St. Petar, St. Dimitrija, St. Atanas, St. George and St. Ilya (which says that the island had been densely populared).

There is a facade fresco on the southern side of the church of Saint Peter (14th century) with very successful compositions: "The siege of Constantinopole" and " the escape to Egypt" which are rarity on the Balcans, professor Grozdanova says.

By the church is the only shelter (built in the 19th century) used by church servants and illegal Macedonian revolutionaries during the period before the Ilinden Uprising as well as over the Uprising in 1903, when a lot of Prespanians rebels were sheltered on the island.

During the antifascist national liberation movement the island served as a shelter for the partisans who were given a lift by fishing boats from one to the other bank of the Lake.
